A figure-8 strap holds the bar more firmly than a single-loop strap. One end goes around your wrist, the other end goes under the bar and back over the same wrist, so the bar sits in the crossing of the 8. There is nothing to wrap or tighten once you are set.
That firm hold suits the heaviest work: deadlifts close to your top weight, rack pulls, heavy shrugs and farmer's carries. It also means you cannot drop the bar quickly. Keep these straps away from cleans, snatches and anything you may need to let go of in a hurry.
